Values
An engineer by trade, Alan opened his wholesale coffee and machine business in 2002 after travelling in Asia. Alan’s mother provided the inspiration for Fair Trade when he was looking into what types of coffee to sell. Alan says ‘When I saw the jar of Fair Trade coffee it was a great moment – this fitted perfectly with selling coffee and helping people.”

Getting started
Timing was everything, Café Direct were looking for distributors in Wales. He went to steering group meetings in Ammanford and Swansea to find out about the Fair Trade movement and become part of it.

Businesss growth
Since then the business has grown and Alan sells coffee, tea, hot chocolate, sugar and coffee machines all over South Wales and into the UK.

Café Fair Trade knows the value of understanding what customers want and is moving more into bean to cup market rather than vending machines. “Café customers are after the coffee shop taste” says Alan.
