Recognising Achievement Award for Credit Union Manager

Barry Roberts, manager of Llandudno Credit Union, has been presented with one of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Recognising Achievement Awards for his contribution to the credit union movement and financial inclusion.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan announced the award at the first ‘Recognising Achievements’ Reception for people in Mid and North Wales. The event praised individuals in Wales for their “exceptional” contribution to helping people through difficult situations.
The Recognising Achievement Awards were born out of an increased sense of pride in Wales and the call for achievements to be recognised.

The First Minister said: “In the 10 years since devolution there has been an increased sense of pride in Wales and an appetite for recognising our achievements. The Recognising Achievements Reception gives us a chance to do just that.

“I am delighted to be a part of these awards and celebrate the work that the ordinary people of Wales do for others. These awards are not about day to day responsibilities, but are about the exceptional contribution people have made for others. It is very humbling to hear some of the stories connected to these awards and I am pleased that the recipients are getting the recognition they deserve.”

Barry was an original member of the team which set up Llandudno Credit Union in 1996. The Credit Union has now 3000 members with £1.8 million in savings. It is the first Credit Union in Wales to offer bank accounts with debit cards.

Barry said: “I normally shun the limelight but this award has made me very proud, especially as it states ‘For Services to Wales’ and recognises the work I have done not just for Llandudno but for the Credit Union movement in Wales”.

Katija Dew, Financial Inclusion Champion for Wales said “Barry is such a committed and dedicated Credit Union manager, who has helped so many people. He is exactly the right person to be given such a prestigious award.”
