Talking About Co-operation
I think in fairness the majority of policy makers, (in Wales at least) are happy that the vast majority of co-operatives fit under the social enterprise banner.
There are a few potential anomalies, for example A worker co-operative that manufactures a commercial product and distributes profits to its members. This type of worker co-operative that is based on a purely commercial economic model could have difficulty convincing policy makers of its “Social” credentials. However a worker co-operative that chooses not to distribute to members but use its surplus for social good, would be in a good position to argue its case.
I would certainly be interested in further research in to such a “Mark” as the value of this would be based on peoples perception of it both within the movement and outside it. It may be worth keeping an eye on the social enterprise mark to see how that develops.
